I have a 2000 ford ranger V6 and The last time I filled up my tank I only got 12.6 miles to the gallon?? I got better gas mileage with my old V8 dodge ram.. What could be the problem? I have a clean air filter and I replaced the plugs about a year ago?? Can anyone help me with this problem.

well most 6 cylinders dont get that great of gas mileage. alot of v8s will get good gas mileage because the they have more power with not that much weight difference. but clean your injectors and keep your tailgate up.

None of these answers make any sense. If for any reason you were burning excessive fuel you would get a rich condition and the check engine lite would come on. If 02 sensor not working lite will come on. Removing the tailgate will give you worse mileage. If your cat. was bad you would get a check engine lite. It will have to be driving habits or brakes dragging or some other problem.

i own a shop, and if its the 4.0 its not going to be the best in the world on gas,i have worked on those things trying to get better mileage on them, and about the only thing that i have found that helps is getting cleaner air to them, they just like gas,i have a s-10 with a 4.3 in it and i get 15 ,and i keep it tuned to its best, and that's all i can get from it,,if it keeps getting worse, you might want to take it by any auto zone, and have it scanned for trouble codes,,it may have a sensor acting up that might be causing the mileage to drop like that, good luck,i hope this help,s.

You may have to change your driving habits. Do you have a cover or the bed, if not put one on the bed. You can take the tailgate off. It acts as a sail and catches air, which can cost you mileage. Also it adds weight to your truck. Do not let your truck idle any more than necessary. Do not go thru drive thru's, try to approach traffic lights and not have to stop and idle(slow down before you get to them) Go lite on the gas pedal when leaving a light (do not spin your wheels).
Think of other ways you can change your driving habits.
