Either TEMPLE or SEVEN DEADLY WONDERS by Matthew Reilly. Or AMAZONIA by James Rollins. Or check out these authors: Jack duBrul, Clive Cussler, John Ringo, Eric Flint, Raymond Feist, David Weber, David Drake, the late David Gemmel, Dennis McKiernan, Jane Lindskold, Stuart Woods, H. Rider Haggard's KING SOLOMON'S MINES is a classic(at least to me). Just to get you started. Also, if you like mysteries with a twist check out the Cliff Janeway series by John Dunning or the series of books by James Doss whose hero is a 7 foot tall Ute Indian.

My two faves are The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams (the movie was so untrue to the book, and just dreadful), and Laughable Loves by Milan Kundera. Both are very funny, witty, and even a bit enlightening - I can't recommend them often nor highly enough!

If you don't mind reading a book with religious themes, I recommend Shiokari Pass. its a story of a person's life back in Shinto Japan when Buddhism was pretty much the main religion and Christians were outcast.Quite a touching story which you can apply to aspects of your life regardless of the religion theme

Anything by Isabel Allende, but I would recommend 'Eva Luna' to start out with or 'House of Spirits'. 'Lamb' by Christopher Moore is very funny, anything by Christopher Moore is amusing but 'Lamb' is definitely the best.
