Do you mean your dad wants to reinstall Windows?

Sounds more like a system crash, or a memory problem - or a resource conflict. If the memory is not enough, get some more and install it.

Go in to the control panel and look at the device manager. See if any devices show an error flag. If there are any, trouble shoot the device.

Back up your data. People only become convinced this is a good idea AFTER they lose all their data. Do you have hundreds of downloaded media files? How long would it take to find and then download it again?

Your real problem can be any of the following.
A virus, or worm (unlikely)
Bad memory that is called by the media when it starts
Your video or sound card cannot handle the media, and the system crashes
A corrupt Windows file.

try the following.

Do a complete scan for viruses. (Go to Grisoft.com and download the free antivirus 7.5 and anti spy. They rock)

Use windows utilities to

first, defrag your disk

Then check the disk for errors (start, run, chkdsk C: /f)

see if you can find a registry cleaner to sort the bad entries in your registry. You almost certainly have some - probably hundreds of them.

Download the latest video drivers for your system

Read the box on your media, see what it says is a minimum system.

Are you running downloaded media? Scan those files for viruses.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
