Things happen in cycles. Things happen over time. While it is one thing to determine ceilings and floors, points of price resistence and support, it is another to estimate the sustainability or variability over time--the linear element. If your estimates of a business, the economic environment, and such affective factors suggest that the price of a stock could be in the x to y range, the next issue is one of slope, the determinor of how much time is needed for that target to be reached, and how long it would stay in that neighborhood. Calculus is a field of mathematics that deals with change and time. It gets complicated.
