The short answer is fiber. You can get fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Eating a piece of white bread won't do it because the bran (outer layer of the grain) was removed before grinding it into that pretty, white, useless flour. Whole grains, however, have the outer bran layer left on, and that's where the fiber is found. Try whole grain (good) or bran (better, but nasty) cereals. Also, some fruits and vegetables have more fiber than others. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" in part because it contains a good amount of fiber. That's whole apples, not apple sauce or apple juice. Also try carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, pears, strawberries, nuts and seeds.
There are two kinds of fiber - soluble and insoluble. Both are good for you, but for different reasons. Soluble fiber dissolves partially and it helps to lower bad cholesterol. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve and it bulks up the stool, easing constipation.
You should increase your fiber intake, concentrating especially on oat bran and wheat bran (they're more effective for preventing constipation than the fiber in fruits and vegetables). Don't suddenly start eating five bran muffins a day, though - you digestive system will not thank you. Gradually increase your fiber intake. It is important to increase the amount of water you drink, too, because fiber absorbs water.
Increased fiber is perfectly safe for pregnant women. If you like rhubarb, it is a natural laxative. In reasonable amounts (say, two pieces of pie) it might help you with the constipation, and still be safe.

1) Get your thyroid tested. And NOT simply the TSH and T4. Get your free T3 tested. If it's low in the range, NO MATTER how normal your TSH may appear, you are hypo. And hypo causes constipation.
2) MAGNESIUM!! If you take enough, it WILL soften your stools, especially the liquid variety.
