As the fertilized egg starts to develope it forms a primitive backbone(the basis of verebrate definition) The tadpole like shape then developes into arms and legs for legged creatures. Gill like structures get tucked into the main body and form the lung like apparttus of breathing creatures. By closely recording the stages of various appendages and organs scientist can determine how similar another creature is to another creature and their likely evolution position the creature can be placed on an evolutionary common ancestor tree.
