I learned how to in Health class last week

you need to use the R.I.C.E. procedure

Rest:Avoid using the affected muscle or joint. this may mean not using the affected area for several days

Ice: Ice helps reduce pain and swelling. Place ice cubes in a plastic bag, and wrap the bag in a towel. Hold the towel wrapped bag on the affected area for 20 min. then remove the bag for 20 min., and then reapply the bag for another 20 min. repeat this process every three waking hours over the course of 72 hours.

Compression:Light pressure through the use of an elastic bandage can help reduce swelling. The bandage should not be so tight that it cuts off the blood supply to the area, and it should be loosened at night

Elevation: Raising the affected limb above the level of the heart helps reduce pain and swelling, especially at night.

hoped this helps

I would NOT put heat on it. Make an ice pack and wrap it on your ankle. Try to put a pillow at the foot of your bed and keep it raised a little. I had same thing, and although it feels as though it's never going to quit hurting--it will, but sorry to tell you, but it could be as long as a few months--mine was about 6 mo. Try not to continue to put much weight on it as you can. Hope you don't have a job standing all day and if you do, maybe your boss would allow you to sit so many hours a day. It will help to be off it as much as possible for at least a couple months. Good luck!

You can put ice on it. You can also put it higher than your heart. I love to put my feet up on the wall while laying on the floor. It brings the swelling down pretty fast. Perhaps you need to rest your ankle. No tumbling for a while. Have you had it x-rayed?

you probably twisted it really bad put ice on it for 20 min and then heat for 20 then repeat this process 3 times and that should bring the swelling down.

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

RICE is the best way to deal with swelling. You don't want to use heat as that will actually increase swelling.

Doctor.
Ice.
Elevation.

Recover, then start working with it again. Don't risk damaging it further until it's fully healed.
