Stachmo is short for Satchel-Mouth. They called him that because he pressed his trumpet so hard to his lips that he had an indent at the top of his mouth that looked like the buckle of a satchel.

Louis had several nicknames as a kid. Satchelmouth, Dippermouth and Gatemouth. Louis met a guy named Percy Brooks, who was an editor with Melody Maker Mag. He greeted Loius one day saying " Hello, Satchmo!' Anf the nickname stuck with him eversince.

I always heard his nickname was taken from "St. Charles, Missouri." That's a suburb of St. Louis.
