Many sources I have seen say that they only have a vocalist, a keyboardist, a guitarist, and a drummer. But the thing is that I can hear the bass in their music. Do they have a bassist?

The Doors were unusual among rock groups because they did not use a bass guitar whilst playing live. Instead, Manzarek played the bass lines with his left hand on the newly invented Fender Rhodes bass keyboard, an offshoot of the well-known Fender Rhodes electric piano, and other keyboards with his right hand. However, the group occasionally used bass players such as Jerry Scheff, Doug Lubahn, Harvey Brooks, Kerry Magness, Lonnie Mack, Leroy Vinegar, and Ray Neapolitan on their albums.

The Doors?
That band disbanded in 1973.

Sorry, I had to answer quickly last night 01-22-07. I was surprised to see this question; especially because of the way it was asked. When I read the question I puzzled about what instrument a bassist plays and the image of that large stringed instrument that most people associate with jazz music came to mind. I had to look it up and found out that a bass (base) guitar player is also called a bassist. So forgive me for being an idiot.

Secondly, the question had me scrambling for information about a new band by the same name since the asker used 'do' instead of 'did'. I guess I forgot that it's 2007 now and kids these days-- well you know.

Great music came from The Doors. I never saw them live but, as far as I knew they never had a bass guitar player. Thanks for the flashback though. Light my Fire!

They might have used some Bass in the studio on the later records, but for the record, Ray Manzerak, the Keyboard Player, Utilized what was known as the Fender Bass Box, It was a 49 or 61 key Electric Piano with Bass Strings. Check out some pictures, It sits atop Rays's Vox Continental Organ. He played that sucker with his left hand, and the Organ with his right. For some reason they never got a bass player in the early days. It was Robby Kreigers parents who loaned the band the $$ to buy the Fender bass Box..I read Rays Book. He claims his early days of boogie woogie piano playing allowed him to play the bass with his left hand without even giving it a thought. Great Band!!

They used a studio bass guitarist on some of their songs but never had a full-time bassist in the band.

Ray Manzarek would play the bass parts to his songs in his keyboard that had the equivalent sounds that ab *** guitar would make.
