Right-click your desktop, then higlight "New" until another drop-down menu pops up, then select "Folder"

Right click the desktop once, move the pointer to New, then left click the top of your list should be folder. Left click that again and then you'll be prompted to put in a name over the default New Folder name. This works in windows in linux it is very similar.

Go to your desktop. Right click and you will see the word NEW. Click on it and you will see folder. Click--your new folder will be on your desktop. You can right click to rename it what you want. Hope this helps.
