Actually, it's legal, as long as you own the original copy of the DVD. If you plan on making a duplicate of the DVD, yes, you will need a DVD burner. This program will make an *.ISO file for your computer so you can make duplicates later. Keep in mind that these ISO files are big. They will be around 4GB or less and will eat up a lot of space in your computer, and you will not be able to view the movie from these ISO files.

If you are able to convert the DVD to *.IFO or *.VOB files, then you can shrink the DVD files to around a 700MB viewable video file and still have decent quality. You would need a program such as Flask with a video codec such as DIVX or XVID to compress these files to a viewable AVI or MPG file on your computer.

It's legal so long as you don't burn the DVD's onto blank cds. If your backing them up onto your computer, so you can keep the movies on your computer for your own use on the computer I'm pretty positive it's legal. Yes you do need a DVD burner, and it will back up the DVD onto your computer for your own viewing pleasure from your computer. I hope this helps.
