No - I think the amount of homework students receive is not too much. However, I do believe that it differs from school system to school system - so it is possible where you are that is true and where I teach where most of the kids just don't do homework (you have to have them do it in class or forget about it) may be two different worlds.
Good Luck!!!

No, everyone is just turning into hippies that don't want their children to go through anything stressful. The truth of the matter is that this country was built on the hard work and strife of our forefathers, and if we continue to baby children and let them go without homework or any work at all they will surely give into obesity, drug use, etc. And as far as the books hurting their back goes, it is not at all a factor. I am a freshman at a large university and I have a bad back problem as it is (doctor said it looked like a 60 year olds'), but that was from playing too much basketball and football as a child, not from carrying a backpack. And even now as I walk miles around campus toteing a backpack I experience NO back pain. I understand that every parent wants their child to be happy all of the time, but sometimes that is not the best parenting. Kids need to learn that they can be rewarded by hard work and not know that they can go over to mommy and daddy who sympathize with them and complain about how they have "so much work." Kids are manipulative its a fact, I was, and they will DO ANYTHING, to DO NOTHING. I think you should help your kids with their work if they seem stressed, not sympathize with them. Teach them that hard work is something to be cherished. But thats just me.

thirty percent of the students who go to college drop out because they do not have the knowledge of skills they need, including doing independent study and work. Be grateful your teachers are preparing you.
