What's it like living in an area with a large 'meth' problem?

Based on some answers I'm seeing to questions on Yahoo! Answers, a good number of people do these days....

What's that like? What're meth addicts really like? What does it do to the community -- or is it relatively invisible?

The media tries to make people with meth addictions invisible; so does the government. I live in a city with the highest rates of drug addiction and homelessness in all of North America, and am faced with addicts every day. The community has gone for years and years to try to ignore the situation, and now that ignoring it isn't an option (for various reasons... not to mention, you can't walk a block downtown without being effected), there is a huge problem when it comes to help. There isn't enough money to house, feed, and put these poor folks through re-hab. Those who get into rehab most often drop out, because of the strict rules, and because it is extremely hard to drop the addiction. Those who are on the streets tend to have addictions co-morbid with mental health issues.

In all my time living in this city, I've only felt threatened once or twice. You just tend to learn where not to go... and I find that even if I'm surrounded by a park full of addicts, they are so far gone, that they are not even aware of who or what is around them.

The problem needs to be fixed, and the government is FINALLY realizing that they should have started cleaning this up years ago. It saddens me. I see it every day, and every day, someone's broken smile breaks my heart.

I knew someone that was a meth addict and didn't even know it. There is a big meth problem where I came from. A lot of people will steal to support their habit, so there is a lot of theft. Do you ever watch "Dog the bounty hunter"? He does a lot for the meth problem in Hawaii where I am from.

Meth heads are pretty easy to spot; they are decidedly more "twitchy" than anyone else. They're always moving, touching themselves and things around them, their speech is rapid and often disconnected (exhibiting what we call in psychology 'flight of ideas'), and they're unable to focus. Their eyes will often be reddened from lack of sleep. They're usually very skinny, because meth suppresses appetite, so they rarely eat. When they're coming down they'll be irritable and fatigued.
Frankly, if I were living in a neighborhood full of meth heads, I'd move. Tomorrow. It can't be a safe place, because they're going to be looking for money to support their habits. Keep a really good lock on the door.

Honestly it all comes down to one thing. Do the people in that area carry firearms? If so the methies either keep their sh!t under controll or get whacked. If not, its pretty bad in a lottery sort of way. If you loose the lottery they might just kill you but but if you have a pretty wife or daughter, or son, or if they don't like the looks of you . . . don't worry, your neighbors will call the police to report the stench after a few days. Or if you call 911 they will be sure to take plenty of pictures of your dead a$$.



Funny that nurse just described me except I've never done meth or anything else.

Its very apparent....a meth addict is hard to hide.......
I was a drug counselor here in California.....and its real.....and nothing to play with.

They are the most frightening addicts I have counseled....if there is any underlining violence in that person the drugs only amplifies it.....

Its nothing nice

during my time counseling I actually though of getting a CCW for work because most of the clients had murderous tendencies, and sometime they would openly admit it..due to the mental deterioration of the drug....
