A little known fact: Bobby Whitlock from Derek and the Dominoes (of Clapton fame) wrote "Thorn Tree in the Garden" about an ex-band member of his who killed Bobby's dog. After the incident, Bobby went into his room and wrote the song. It's the last track on "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs." However, I doubt it is the song you were looking for. On the plus side, you have the answer to some obscure trivia question in the future.
