In a nutshell most Democrats believe in more government assistance for the poor, more social programs, abortion rights, stronger environmental laws, and higher taxes to pay for this all. Democrats typically support labor unions, and are more liberal on all social issues. (gay marriage, socialized medicine, welfare, higher taxes on corporations, etc).
Republicans typically believe in lower taxes and fewer government services (pay less and get less from government- so smaller overall government). Republicans stress the importance of personal accountability and responsibility, strong ethical values, (often more religious) often pro-life and against homosexual marriage.
That said- there are people in both parties that don't fit these stereotypes.
Democrats complain that republicans are only interested in themselves, and in reducing taxes on companies and the rich. Republicans complain that democrats don't understand how the economy actually works and seldom think through the unintended consequences of their grand schemes.
In truth both parties have good points and bad points. Our system works best when the balance of power shifts back and forth between the two.
Even if you pick a party now, it is best if you don't blindly follow the tenants of that party- always think for yourself. Most people get more conservative as they get older and wiser, but there are exceptions.
I encourage you and everyone reading this to challenge your assumptions- If you are a republican- study some environmental science or get to know a homosexual. If you are a democrat- take a class in economics or learn about the downsides of socialized medicine from someone in western Europe or Canada.
Only this way will we become stronger as a country.

Honey, they are both lousy because they do not represent the majority of americans. Just about the entire country is waiting to get excited about a political party. We usually have two aristocratic men to choose from, and have to try to sift through the crap to figure out which is less of a bum.
Democrats and Republicans both sold out lock stock and barrel to power interests, monied interests, corporate interests. One difference is the Democrats have to try to pretend to consider the needs of people other than the rich. Generally, it's easy because the media goes along and reports the minute crumbs that are tossed to the middle and lower classes.
For example, it has been widely reported that Nancy Pelosi, in her big first 100 hour plan, went after the scandalous subsidies of oil companies. Bravo, Nancy, right? Well, all she did in reality is shave 15% off within the next five years. For all I know, all of it could be in year five and will have been repealed by then.
They're all in cahoots because, obviously, media is big corporate America.
What I would recommend is that you feel out who seems to be a geniune and authentic person for each race, who cares about people and will work hard to move the country forward. That might be a Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green, Libertarian, Socialist -- whatever.
It doesn't make sense to declare yourself a Democrat or Republican. The whole spectrum is slanted to the right at this point -- slanted grotesquely to benefit corporate interests.

Democrats are the "party of the working class", which has evolved many times over the years. They have always been pro-union and support a bigger government. They believe that it is the government's job to assist the people in this country and have been known to raise taxes in order to help the people and give a boost to the economy. Democrats are more likely to be secular, pro-choice, anti-war, and opposed to things such as gun ownership. In the past 40+ years they have taken on causes such as civil rights and women's liberation, but this hasn't always been the case. During the Civil War, for instance, a large number of them--especially in the South--were advocates of slavery and imposing Jim Crow laws. The more radical sect, The Dixiecrats, sympathised with the KKK. See: Strom Thurmond and George McGovern. The Republicans are for smaller government, cutting down taxes imposed on corporations and the wealthier class, which they believe does more harm than good to the economy. They are not against government assisted programs, as some people would have you believe, but they believe that it should be used on a temporary basis. In other words, the government shouldn't be used as a crutch. The Republicans are more likely to be more religious (even though a great number of them are secular in their beliefs), advocates for gun ownership, opponents of tax and spend, pro-life, and believe in a strong military. Strong military=strong country. Another note on the Civil War: Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. The issue of slavery is what brought the party into being in 1861, kicking out the old, other major party, The Whigs.

Listen you cry babies, while you are pouting over tax breaks for the rich, guess what. The top 1% of our nation pay nearly 40% of the taxes generated in this country. If you were making 16,000 dollars, you seen your taxes fall from 6.5% to nearly 5%. Do the math, who got the tax breaks?
Democrats= socialist cry babies.

Democrats consider the whole and realize that society is only as strong as its weakest members.
Republicans consider themselves, and to hell with everyone else.
So, should Republicans be surprised when a Republican Government only considers it's own interests, ignoring even those who put them in office.
It's poetic really.

Democrats- more liberal, meaning they want the federal government to help citizens more
Republicans- more conservative, meaning they want the federal government to mind citizens' own business. In other words, they want the state governments to have more power

Democrats are liars who say what they think the people want to hear but do what the rich pay them to do.
Republicans are liars who say what they think the people want to hear but do what the rich pay them to do.
The only difference is what the Democrats think the people want to hear is different from what the Republicans think the people want to hear.
