If a non-Indian/caucasian (US), married to an Indian (Hindu from the US), visited India, how would the non-Indian be treated by the majority of Indian people? Would they be treated kindly/warmly? coldly? Indifferent? In general, how would the non-Indian spouse be treated by the extended family of the Indian/Hindu?

Their behavious depends largely on your behaviour.

If you readily accept & respect the local customs, if you show a genuine interest in the local art & culture. If you appreciate the local food etc. Basically if you act like a nice human being- You will be over-run with love and affection in India. I swear you will not find the same kind of warmth anywhere else in the world.

Family matters - so dont be shy of telling your in-laws , how lucky you are to be married to their child & how lucky you & your spouse are for having such wonderful parents. Call your mother-in-law "Ma" (hindi for mother) and that alone is enough to make you family.

Last tip : Laugh a lot - Smile a lot - in India good nature is infectious.

India is all heart - over a billion people living in poverty & cramped for space - yet happy most of the time - give a drop of love and you will get a river of love in return.

The last thing you want to be percieved is as a snooty, arrogant , ugly-hearted foriegner. Pls get an idea from your spouse on local customs & what are the essential MUST-NOT-SAY OR DO Things.

As an american who has visited India but is not married I can tell you they are warm toward those from other nations. Most feel proud that others find indian women attractive and indian men usually find american women attractive (though culturally unworthy of marriage). Rarely you might run into a bit of jealousy or resentment from indian men, especially in a club or bar where I narrowly avoided killing a guy that was trying his hardest to escalate.

As for male indian female foriegner I would say it is probably about the same with the women being much more subtle about any jealousy and the men perhaps pittying the guy :-)

I'd say very well. Despite the fact that our Indian society is a very cloistered society, it is also like a sponge and has taken in all peoples of the world very harmoniously. I remember the story of Parsi's when they came to India and approached the then ruler, I don't recollect the era, and asked for asylum. The ruler asked how they would merge with Indian society. The leader of the Parsees took a glass of water filled to the brim, took a tablespoon of sugar and put it in, and said: "Like this". Not a drop of water flowed over. They were gifted the Nariman Point area, Bombay, I believe, to settle down in.
