That would have to be Gerald R. Ford. He was a senator (don't remember from which state) when Nixon picked him for his next vice president. After that there was a slew of Governors: Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush. Yes, Ford is the answer, unless there's a problem with him going from vp to pres.

I was listening to the radio earlier today and I think they said that JFK was the last and that there have only been two in history that were senators and didn't have much else on the resume in politics when they were elected.
