Or is there more to it than that, Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler also ALL thought that what they were doing was right, were they good leaders because they did what they thought was the "right thing"?

you seem confused RLP, my point does not involve the actions of the aforementioned people, just that what they thought they were doing was the "right thing", which it really wasn't, the point is that just trying to do what you think is the right thing frequently isn't good enough

No, A good leader is much more than doing what he/she thinks is right. A good leader is someone who does what is right for his people, his country and in some cases the world. A good leader listens to his people, considers them, provides a feeling of safety and security, confidence and strength. A good leader doesn't have ulterior motives and seeks the betterment of his people's situation rather than his own.

A good leader is compelled to always do what they think is right. The dictators mentioned in the question all had self serving interests that drove them to aquire power. Leadership is more about setting examples and taking care of and developing subordinates. As well with regards to decisions a good leader will ensure that courses of action have either thier followers best interests in mind or completion of an assigned task. The above mentioned dictators were perhaps charismatic but based on the out comes and effects for thier people, they were not good leaders.

To me, a good leader is someone who can determine what the "next step" or solution, should be - and then has the ability to build public support for that option.
Many good leaders has done nasty things, that only occasionally come to light.

I'm thinking Psalms 23 is the basic Road Map for leadership.
You know: Bush is my Sheppard I shall not pay tax. He leadeth me to Baghdad city. Yea though I walk through the valley of death I shall not question stay the course.

Any leader, who is elected by the people, should do what is in the best interest of his/her constituency. It is not fair or proper for a leader to execute his/her duties in a way that is for their own personal agenda, or the agenda of a select few, such as businesses and lobbyists.

Only if the leader is -- in fact -- right. Thinking or knowing you are right is worthless -- indeed dangerous if one is wrong.

It is wrong to stubbornly follow your ideology when the facts do not support your beliefs.
