There is a saying - "if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel"
Your health insurance may not cover you while overseas. DO check that thouroughly. And even if they do - it might not cover you as much as you might need. No one can force you to get travel insurance, but - are you going to take the risk? The worse case I heard of is a guy who got hit by a runaway truck in Mexico - the cost involved was about a million dollars after all the medical bills, hospital care, transport back home and medical equipment.
You might be careful while travelling but there are factors outside your control.
have a friend who has been to South Africa. And by what he described, I STRONGLY urge yo to get travel insurance. It is your peace of mind. It is not just about illnesses but you might be adversely affected by criminal activity (robbery or even personal injury)

Yeah you definitely need some type of insurance going over to Africa. Most insurance carriers don't cover you once you leave the U.S.For example, Our family went over to Prague and my dad got a real bad stomach virus from eating some bad chicken while we were there. He had to remain in the hospital for a number of days and if it had not been for them we would still be paying on those bills and my dad may not have made it .. so you may wanna try them out!!

I would definately get it if I were you. If you dont have Medical insurance that would cover you anywhere you should look into it. I know that CSA Travel protection covers upto 50,000 in medical expenses and 250,000 for emergency medical transportation. I have used them in the past. I didnt have to file a claim but I hear they are really good company to use. They have a website www.csatravelprotection.com or call @ 1-800-873-9855

Don't go anywhere without travel insurance. Ever. It's just asking for trouble. If you suffer an accident and need serious emergency treatment, or even to be med-evac home you will need that insurance. In many countries you would need to pay for any medical treatment and the prices can vary hugely.

I've never had a reason to, but if you decide to, this site sells itravel insurance [the tab at the top that says INSURANCE] and the rates they have for anything they sell on here is top notch.
Good Luck.

When going to Africa get as much insurance as you can. My Auntie is there now and has been for quite awhile and she tells me there are many illnesses and many insects etc. Hot temps and illness go together
