What does it mean when there is a dot under or over a note?

It means to play it with a staccato .

This is typically the notation for staccato. What that means is that the note should be played short or cut off.

A quarter note with a staccato marking would be played about the same length as as sixteenth note only it would still hold it's quarter note value.

If it is under or over a note then that means it is *staccato*
make the note short.

if its next to it, that means it gets 3 counts (im not extremely experienced, but no offence you dont sound too much either). and if it is over or under, it means staccato which means that you do it really quick like just a little shplits of the note instead of holding it out full. if you know what legato is, its the opposite.

Play it short. Such as, if playing a string instrument such as violin, viola, cello, or bass, stop the bow on the strong quickly. On the piano, bounce on the note instead of holding it down. On a wind instrument just use short breaths.
