Depends on what you like. There were some good answers but theres a few things you should know first. Rabbits are cool pets, but they need a big cage, they need to be cleaned atleast twice a week, if not more (rabbits poop 200-300 times a day) they chew on EVERYTHING, including electrical wires if they can get to them, and if you dont have them fixed, they can develop nasty attitudes. If you're okay with cleaning a cage all the time, covering all your wires, and have the money to have it fixed, then this might be an okay choice.
Parakeets are pretty smart but if you value your quiet time, this definitely is not a pet for you. They chirp and squawk all day long.
Guinea pigs are alright but I find them rather boring. If you want a pet with personality I wouldnt get a guinea pig. They dont really do much of anything.
If youre not scared of rodents, I'd really consider a rat. Theyre one of the smartest (small) animals around. They figure things out like nobodys business, theyre fun to play with, they can be trained to do things (they can be litter trained, they'll sit on your shoulder while you do things, I had one that I'd let run around the room and she used to follow me around like a little puppy) They get a bad rep for being dirty but theyre actually very clean. People who say theyre gross and dirty, have clearly never owned one. Mine are constantly cleaning themselves. The only draw backs about having a rat is they need a nice big cage for climbing (they love to climb) and if youre considering getting one, you should probably get atleast 2, because they love company. (2 of the same sex, because if you get a male and a female, you'll have a bunch of little baby rats before you know what happened.

I would have to say guinea pig, rabbit or cat.Guinea pigs will never bite you unless your very mean or touch them in a place when they are in pain, they are intelligant, and can be taught to be held quickly.Rabbits can be litter trained, cute, and love attention,on the other hand they are alot harder to train to be held.Cats can be litter trained, but cats often tear up furniture, and climb on tables and break stuff, but cats can be trained not to get on tables and furniture.

Hedgehogs, sooo cute, or daygus, which are kangaroo mice (like on Rescuers Down Under). Or sugargliders, but I hear they can get a little smelly because they are related to ferrets.

A Pacman Frog. They are ADORABLE, but they don't stay small for long. Mine are about 6" across...which is still smaller than your average chihuahua.
:)
Good luck!

That would depend on you, but for me it is a cat. You don't have to take them for walks and they are great for lowering blood pressure. When I am going through bad times they always cheer me up.
