Well obviously you alread know about the battle of Thermopylae. Well they lived in a town called a Polis and it had many different types of people. You had your warriors and then higher members derived from warriors and then lower derrived of slaves. The reason that the Spartans were such fierce warriors is because they had so many slaves that if they were not they would be over run. The Spartans began training at age 9-12 (for the military) and stayed in the military until they were about 45 to fifty (any anal retentive person who comes on here to tell me I am wrong, go argue 3000 years of history cuz neither one of us can be proven right.) anyways they underwent the harshest training the Greeks had to offer. Finally their enemies were the athenians, but the problem was the athenians were all navy, the spartans were all land. It was the classic battle that the spanish would deal with later with the english elephant vs whale. neither does well out of their habitat and in order for the spartans to get to the athenians they would have to go to their enviroment and vice versa. Also the spartans attacked very few countries because if they left the slaves would over run their wives children and old men while they were gone. They were truly stuck. Finally, when the spartans went to Thermopylae they only did it because of the crushing power of the Persian army (estimated at 1,000,000 originally but proven to only be 300,000 since logistics in the area would only support that many). Finally they were the last remainder at the battle, and their leader had a name like a lion which evades me at the moment who fought very bravely. Even though they were a warrior society their woman were the freest of all the Greek woman at the time. They were allowed to own their own business and keep their own money. Yes the men were encouraged to have other man lovers and boys were subject to older men. Romance between a man and a woman was very rare. Marriage was to insure the rights of children to inherit the family fortune and keep the family line going. The motto of the Spartan mother was "come home with your shield or be carried on it."
