What kind of dinner are you doing?... IE. formal, casual.. Sit down... Buffet...
How good of a cook are you? Do you want quick and easy or do you have time to prep?
Where are you located?... Near the ocean, Midwest.. IE. seafood vs meat and potatoes or a combo....
How fast to you need an answer?

Think of something that will be east to serve and that you can have conversation with your guests. I would suggest a roast, and some easy finger food....cheese plates, and a nice salad. Keep it as fresh as possible.
