I made my High School Basketball team in the 9th grade and I was never on any offical team before. But I did play almost everyday at lunch and before school from 5th-8th grade. I was also about your height I think, cause in the 9th grade I was listed at 5'10, so I think I was about 5'8 as an 8th grader.
Just focus on a part of your game you want to improve upon. For example, stealing the ball. Get good at it, then focus on something else. All you need to do is be good at two or three things and just decent at a few other things if you want to be a starter. I was good at stealing, ball-handling, driving to the basket and passing, I wasOK at blocking and rebounding, but a terrible shooter. I was the worst free-throw shooter on the team and probably the worst jump-shoter. It was because I was nervous, cause on the playgournd or in the park I could hit threes about 40% of the time. After school once I even almost out-shot Casey Jacobseen, who was in the NBA for a few years. We went to the same High School.
But I think you will make the team unless your at a real big school. Everyone who made it through tryouts at my school made the team. Plus you can always just buy your way on the team - donate your time for car washes, sell candy, and donate money, you'll make the team for sure.

5 8 for an eighth grader is pretty freaking tall, that's like SF PF height.
With shooting, theres not much you can really do to improve than just practice.
Some good drills are the miken drill. It's where you take a ball and make a right handed lay up and get the rebound under the hoop and put it right back up on the left hand side with your left hand and keep on alternating trying to stay off the ground as much as possible, so no lolli gagging. *As my coach always says"
For ball handling, the best thing you can do is to become as good with your weak hand as you are with your strong hand. One good drill is to get a long wall, preferably like a giant brick wall on a school wall that has pavement underneath it. Take a tennis ball and a basketball and put the tennis ball in your weak hand and bounce it along the wall while dribbling the ball with your strong hand and keeping your eyes straight infront of you w/o looking at either and shuffling up and down along the wall. Then switch off.
Umm what else do I do
During HS tryouts, always go for the ball no matter what, but play smart. Keep your head up when you're dribbling and don't focus too hard. Just have some fun. Even when you know the ball is going to land out of bounds, dive for it anyways. Show some hussle and enthusiasim
Hey, If Tim Duncan can do it, you can too

Highschool teams usually have cuts and tryouts, so I think you should give it your all at the tryouts, since you have a slight advantage because you are tall.
You should know what happens in a basketball game, and how many points correspond to which baskets, but most importantly, you should practice a lot.
You can learn how to improve by watching basketball games and seeing how the top players handle the ball. You can also improve by practicing with other people in the park on the basketball courts; you usually can find someone who's good over there.

i made the mistake of not playing basketball till i was a senior in high school and i thought i would be able to play with every1 but i found out soon that u have to have organized basketball experience
so if you can try to play in a ymca league or just look for tournaments in ur local area
also if your just sitting around ur house doing nothing go outside and dribble or shoot if you have a goal
google basketball workouts one drill that works for your dribbling is a drill called figure 8s u should be able to find instructions on doing them on the net

okay theres alot of ways to improve but the best one has got to be playing people who are better than you. go to a local park or ymca and play pick up games with older kids. also, since you are 5'8, work on shooting by yourself and dribbiling with both hands.
