ok this is what you need to know

neither spin is "better" than the other. situational playing is very important. there are many forms of shots but ill just go over a few.
an offensive loop is a very common shot that involves intense topspin. the ball will loop slightly high and rocket when it hits the table.
the most common form of back spin (bottom spin) is a chop or cut. this shot is normally extremely low with heavy backspin. when the opposing player tries to return it his risk of hitting the net increases greatly.

my main advice. practice alot. topspin is great and looping can be a great way to win some matches. but never forget your backspin. varying amounts of backspin can confuse a player and cause them to hit too short or too long.

goodluck. check out some ping pong sites and if you get serious about it check out some more advanced paddles if you havent already. i recommend either Butterfly or Double Happiness.
