Assume x = a/b. For a and b nonzero, and a not equal to b,

xb = a
xb + b = a + b

Divide both sides by (a - b), and we get

(xb + b)/(a - b) = (a + b)/(a - b)

Factor the numerator,

b(x + 1)/(a - b) = (a + b)/(a - b)

Therefore,

(a + b) / (a - b) = b(x + 1)/(a - b)
