I have a list of my husband's HUGE family (5 siblings, 20 grandchildren, 60+ great grandchildren, etc), complete with birthdays. I am pretty confident to say, I am probibly the only one in the family with such complete info. Anyway, I thought I would create an online family tree for all of them, so everyone has all the info. HOWEVER, now my mother-in-law is telling my husband that I need to get all the info on the ex-spouses that are no longer in the family for this to be "real." I was planning on only using current family info, but now he's pushing me to ask about past family members -- Is there a problem with using current family members? Will it nullify my work?

If ex's had children with said family member than you need to include them in order for the tree to be compleate but if no children came of the marriages than there is no need to include them

If you're going to do a accurate family tree, you should include all current and past family. The tree you make today, may be wrong tomorrow, and when someone adds the new information, that doesn't mean you erase the old info... it's part of the history of the family. Make sure you put in information like - divorced, deceased, or whatever the case is, and the date.

I would only say if you had children with any of the ex's then yes you will have to include them in the family tree. If no off spring were produced then cross them off your mind and forget about the past and move on. And maybe tell your mom in law to mind her own business.

The only reason you should include Ex spouses is if children were a product of the marriage. Also if any children were born out of wedlock you need to include the child and the biological father/mother who is not family.

If their are children that lead into the family tree that would be great !! My brother had started one and he is so far back in years it's amazing. It's very time consuming but interesting..

ONLY if there were children produced. If there were no offspring from an ex spouse, there is no reason to have information in there.
