He was a black Muslim leader. Coming from a past of crime and drugs, he converted to Islam while in prison and was instrumental in spreading the Nation of Islam movement among American blacks. Alex Haley's biography of him is pretty informative.

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, also known as Detroit Red and Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (North Omaha, Nebraska, May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965 in New York City) was a Black Muslim Minister and National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He was also founder of the Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

During his life, Malcolm went from being a drug dealer and burglar[1] to one of the most prominent black nationalist leaders in the United States; he was considered by some as a martyr of Islam and a champion of equality. As a militant leader, Malcolm X advocated black pride, economic self-reliance, and identity politics. He ultimately rose to become a world-renowned African American/Pan-Africanist and human rights activist.

Following a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964, Malcolm converted to orthodox Islam. Less than a year later he was assassinated in Washington Heights on the first day of National Brotherhood Week. Although three members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of his assassination (one of whom confessed), there are several conspiracy theories positing the involvement of elements of the United States Government.

During the 1960s -- the civil rights movement, Malcolm X was one of th eyoung blackleaders. He differed from some of the more moderate leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., in a number of ways. For example, he advocated the idea that "black is beautiful"--I think he's the one who coined the phrase. He never engaged in violence--or advocated it--but he did say that blacks had a right to use force in self-defense (which jerked a lot of white racists' chains!).

If you want to really learn about him, read his "Autobiography of Malcolm X"--its short--but if you want to really get a feel for how frustrated and angry African-Americans were at the time, it's priceless, whether you agree with his politics or not (most peopledon't). Most people believe he was murdered because he scared the white supremecists.

Malcolm X was an influential leader with a group called the Nation of Islam. He advocated blacks seperation from the mainstream culture, since it was not geared toward them.He later seperated from the Nation after finding several misconceptions within the group, and formed his own organization, unfortunately, he got killed before he could truly make any moves.

Find out by reading "The Autobiography of Malcolm X." He had help from Haley, the man who later wrote "Roots." Good stuff.

Basically a black supremist. While Martin Luther King wanted all colors to live together, Malcolm X hated whites.

Black Muslim Radical in the 60's in Chicago and California. Dangerous murderer just like taliban and such but fully American who just changed his name and his religion. This was a very popular thing to do in the black culture of that time in big cities. One of basketballs greatest (Lew Al Cinder) became (Kareem Abdul Jabar) The there was the (Greatest of All Time) (Muhammad Ali) . Something like white Hollywood is doing today by joining that cult (Scientology). Weird stuff going on.
