I have never rented a car before. What are the things to look out for and any good advice on who to rent from?

I have been to vegas and dont plan on driving around the strip. We have other sites in mind. I have never rented a car before and dont know what are the hidden costs or who is reputable to rent from. From what I have read in there policys is you may be charged or you may not be charged. Pretty cloudy if you ask me.

are you >25? have a credit card?
"look out for" the size/type of car you want to rent! Go to Orbitz or Yahoo travel or similar, punch in the dates you want to rent, look for best deal. They are all pretty much the same, but the big names (Avis/Hertz/National etc.) probably charge more.
When you get the car, make sure to go all around it and look for dings before you drive away, if you find any, note them on rental agreement and make sure the rental folks initial it!
If you have comprehensive insurance on your own car, will probably cover you so you don't need CDW, likewise many credit cards cover you also.
Don't drink and drive, and watch out for those Vegas cabbies & tour bus drivers--they are aggressive! (as opposed to tourists, who are just drunk and stupid)

Dear tpjp19, you totally don't need a car in Vegas, unless you have a special trip in mind. There are a ton of tours even out to Hoover Dam about an hour or 2 outside of Vegas (which they like to call the Damn Dam tour). The STRIP has trams, trolleys, cabs all over the place to get you where ever you might want to go. <---This would also be a lot cheaper and a lot less complicated. The airport (McCarren) is real close to the strip. You can also choose to walk a little bit and see most of the place....Plus you can't drink and drive so what fun is driving...Have a blast....

Don't rent a car! Between traffic and parking, you will regret it. If you know the area very well, you can use the off-strip streets as shortcuts. The strip gets so congested it can take upwards of an hour to travel 1-2 miles. Use the cabs, trolleys and the monorail. The time you save traveling will allow you to party more. And like Paris said, you can drink everywhere so driving becomes either 1.) dangerous because you drank like a fish or 2.) a drag, because you can't drink like a fish.

Rent a car in Vegas????Never!!!!!The strip is jammed packed with traffic--it takes 20 minutes to get through 4 red lights and that's on a good day!!! Bring your sneakers and take the buses and save the money. Public transportation is real cheap there and the buses are new and have 2 levels.

As long as you're over 25 years old with a valid drivers' license and major credit card, you're good.
IMO - stay away from Dollar rent a car - they hold a minimum of $250 on your card, even if the rental fee is $40! I like National and Alamo for good deals.

don't do dollar, you might save a few $$,but you wait in line forever to get a car, best to use budget ,avis, alamo and/or go to
www.kayak.com to find out which places have good deals to rent a car... If you plan to do the strip only, use public transportation, walk everywhere,,because parking is pain sometimes, and just getting to the casino to park is a pain in the butt too...Therefore only rent the car for the days you travel away from the strip....
Just don't do dollar rent a car,use it last time, waited in line for over 30mins to get my car,it was ridiculous, not worth saving a few $$... goodluck
