There isn't anyone alive that isn't flawed in one way or another. I find it absurd that a flawed individual would sit in judgment on another flawed individual, instead of being understanding and compassionate? If nothing more, at least being able to relate to the same trials and tribulations facing us all.
We would be living in a better world if we were less punitive and more forgiving of everyone else's flaws.

To kwb1965: Where in the entire question have I posted the word "Americans"? This is a problem on a GLOBAL scale, and not unique to Americans.

You know, it starts with childhood and goes from there. We get trained to be competitive, judgemental and pig-headed. It takes great willpower and effort to step away from that model and stop following the crowd. In order to be able to stop judging others, we have to be able to stop judging ourselves. If we could accept the "flaws" in ourselves as part of who we are, then we could start accepting others as well. Perfectionism is terrible, because those who expect themselves to be perfect, start to expect it from everyone else. I'm paraphrasing, because I don't have it in front of me, but I have a quote on my desk, in front of my face, that says...the hardest and most exciting thing you can do is to stop trying to be perfect and start trying to be yourself.

I only have compassion for the compassionate. It's tough relating to anyone else but, ourselves. How often do we live with other people's problems unless we are politicians, social workers, or psychologist of the such.
Everyday people are only comprehensible of their knowledge. It's very rare to meet someone with enough intelligence to sympathize with something that does not effect them directly. It's takes theorizing or at least questioning to get an idea of someone Else's perception. Not many even go that far.
Humans by nature can be self centered. And sometimes be compassionate. It all depends on their environmental factors. Animals in packs will take care of the elderly. But, they will also leave the sick behind. Humans are adaptive. They can be however they choose to be. And adapt whatever ethics they choose.
When it comes to survival we only sympathize with what is close and known to us. It will take a lot of time for people to change.

I don't think it is a matter of Americans judging people based on their "flaws", it's a matter of insecure Americans judging people who are different or whom they are envious of.
Example: The Ugly Duckling

Some people are self absorbed and selfish, take heart there are many compassionate, and understanding people in the world, the majority are at church. It It is the people from church that are there for you and help in time of need, called human kindness. We are human and not perfect, only God is perfect. God Bless you!

I believe it's because people tend to be self-interested first and foremost. A person is more likely to protect and defend what is theirs before they will give consideration to others.
