If you can find a really good teacher they can do wonders. I have no musical talent whatsoever and this guy teaching me made me understand theory, scales, and other basics within a month or two.

I'm an engineer during the day- I've been playing and teaching on the side for 20+ years now-

To start with, Yes-it is worth taking lessons, but lessons with a teacher should be 'one piece of the pie.'

As far as finding an instructor, get references from family and friends-or if you belong to a church, check out their contemporary worship group- there's usually someone in there who teaches on the side, who probably knows your family, and is probably cheaper than the local music superstore.

Once you're 'up and running'- you know a few chords, can put together a few songs, etc. start playing with other people- I can't stress this enough. The two main reasons that beginning musicians lose interest is that they can't find anyone to play with, and thyre using unplayable 'student' level instruments(I won't address that here).
Find someone who's close to your current skill level and get together on a regular basis to play with. Agree beforehand to work on a song, share the music/tab/chords, and when you do sit down together, BE PREPARED- you don't have to know the material cold, but be familiar with it before you start working together. I guarantee that you'll get real good in a hurry...
GOOD LUCK...

If you would like to be introduced into a worthwhile and rewarding hobby, and you have the money to spend, then yes! U can of course learn by book, but it is soooo helpful to have someone else to guide you and inspire you, and most teachers will let you try out lessons for a month to see how you like it- you could even just rent a guitar if you don't have one. :-)

its a gift you will have the rest of your life. If you like attention there is no better way to meet girls than with a guitar. That is the sole reason I started playing in high school.
