I've run a poll on a site devoted to thumb rings to get the answer to this question. By far the most common answer from the folks who wear them is that it is a fashion statement. Many people says it makes them feel sexy. The vast minority who wear them do it because of his or her sexual orientation.
Interestingly, those who don't wear them but have responded to the poll by far think that thumb rings signify sexual orientation, but that doesn't bear out from the responses of those who wear them.
I think that at one time they may have been a sign of sexual orientation, but over time it has become a fashion statement. The same could be said about men wearing earrings. Once it was uncommon and usually done only by the gay community, and now they are worn by many people.
I haven't seen a single response where someone is wearing them for health reasons, although I am sure there are some who do.
Although it takes a little getting used to, I don't think it is any more uncomfortable than wearing a ring on any other finger. For example, If one were to start wearing a ring on her middle finger, she would notice it for a week or so, then it wouldn't be noticable. The thumb is the same way.
The only annoyance I know is that it is a little more difficult to take lids off jars. This is because the thumb is key to grasping the lid tightly, and the thumb ring gets in the way.
If you wanted to try a thumb ring yourself, it's about the same size as the index or middle finger. So if you try it and decide it's not for you, you can always wear the ring on one of the other fingers.
I've been wearing thumb rings for about three years now, and I love them.

Not that I know of. I know it was big in the 90's to wear thumb rings, but like pinky rings, people just realize it kinda looks retarded. I do know there used to a thumb torture in Japan in medevil time, and ring like things were slipped on to the tumbs and connected, like mini thumb handcuffs... Well, anywho, they snapped the thumbs back that way. But as for thumb rings having some symbolic thing, I dont believe so.

There's no real significance for it. I wear a thumb ring sometimes because my mom bought me a ring from Hawaii but it didn't fit any other fingers so I wear it on my thumb. However, my handreading book says that people who wear rings on their thumbs are stubborn. But that's just superstition, just for fun.
Mainly just for fashion.

I study as quickly as, long term in the past, that it skill the wearer needs to have greater administration over existence. each and each finger has a diverse psychological which skill, in accordance to the article I study, and since the thumb is a needed digit, it controls something of the hand. And the index finger controls awareness and ordering the international around us. (i do no longer positioned on a hoop -- no longer married, the two.)
