Every week in dance we learn a new combination. It takes me all class to remember it, no matter how hard I concentrate. How can I remember it better?

I find it helps when I go over rhythms in my head... not counts but rhythms.

If it's one two and three four and FIVE six seven eight

I go: da da doo da da doo DA da da da

Make sense?

It's a practice thing.

Choreography can be difficult to remember because it relies on a lot of diferent factors. First of all, people learn at different speeds and in different ways. Some people are visual learners, some people learn by repetitive action, some people need to read about what they are doing and commit it to memory. Secondly, choreography (and dance in general) requires muscle memory, which means repetition is important. In other words practice, practice, practice. If you are learning a new pattern or combintion every week and not practising in between classes, you might as well forget it. This would be true of any physical sport like dancing, tai-chi, gymnastics etc. Third, if you are dancing with a partner and you are the female half, your partner is responsible for making sure you get the correct lead at the right time, so that could be part of the problem if you are dancing with someone who is also just learning the pattern. Fourth, especially in flight dances, we often concentrate too much on foot work, and not enough on what we are trying to achieve, and where we are trying to go on the floor. Dance is more than just steps. Try breaking the patterns down into components so that you understand each element ie; weight changes, foot leads, etc. Finally, maybe your instructor is moving a little too fast. If other people in your class are struggling, ask them to slow down.

Try practicing in front of a mirror and you know what they say "Practice makes perfect" it truly does. When you dance just focus on the beat and the moves your going to do next. Have attitude and confidence is key all these elements put together create for a fantastic performance! Good Luck!!!

Do you have a metronome at home? Try paying attention to the beat of the song's rhythm and adjusting the metronome to that beat. Another way is to chalk out your foot patterns on the floor, if you have a concrete or tile floor in your house. You color-code the moves for left & right, forward & backwards. You can also tape footstep shapes to the floor.

you know who the people are in your class that get the combos down right away. hang with them & get them to show you the steps 2 times before joining in. or, pay closer attention to the music & try to associate it to segments of the routine. thats easier than trying to catch it all in one big chunk.

Write it down! You can do it whan you're bored in school, and it just looks like you're taking notes.
