I coach H.S. basketball and I would suggest that you find leagues to play in prior to trying out for the team next year. Ball handling can be improved by taking time to work on it as much as possible. The keys to working on your dribble is to always keep your head up when you practice. Pound the ball with each hand as hard as you can why practicing your crossover behind the back and through the legs. Keep the dribble close to your body and don't let the ball come up any higher than your hip. At first you may lose the ball a lot, but that is OK. Just pick it up again and keep working at it. Shooting should be worked on close to the basket and then out. Don't try to shoot deeper shots(3's) at first. Get good at shooting 5 ft shots.....then 10 ft shots.....etc. The power from your jump shot should come from your legs and the touch from your fingertips. Jumping as high as you can from 5 ft out with a soft touch will improve your form and leg strength. I would also make it a point to meet your future H.S. coach and ask them would you need to do to make the team next year. See if he has a little time he could spend with you to work on some things. This will give you the info you need and also be very impressive in his eyes. The last bit of advice I will give is to play as much basketball with older-better players than you. You may struggle against them, but it will help tremendously. I don't even know you, but I am impressed that you truely want to be a player. I love kids like that! Good Luck!!!!

You most definitly can. Like you, I never really played until my 9th grade year. By my 10th grade year I was the best on my junior varsity team and actually got promoted to the varsity mid way through the season. Here was my trick. Actually wasn't a trick at all. I learned to do everything. Shoot, pass, defend, and especially outhustle the guys. I also listened to my coach. If you listen and study the game, you can be so much better than guys that have played for years. I looked at the team and the fundamentals, then expanded. It takes hard work, but good luck.

Best way to get better in basketball, is to practice. It's that simple. If you want to dribble better, just grab a ball and dribble. Go to a flat area and dribble for about an hour each day with both hands. If you want to get better shooting, ask your school's coach to show you a correct way to shoot, and then practice it nonstop..

As far as making the team, that depends on how much you've played bball and how good the team is.

Have your parents help you in finding a local tutor if you will in basketball. You may also want to try hanging out at your local gymnasium or playground after school. Most youths are willing to show you a thing or two after they get to know you.Practice dribbling and shooting at least an hour everday. Tryouts are open to all. if you don't make it, keep trying. Good luck kiddo. I'm rooting for you. Never stop believing in yourself and you can master anything.
