The best brand for what.. just starting to learn Ibanez for electric, acoustic Ibanez or Applause. Now the best over all I play Paul Reed Smith and it is wonderful, Fender, Gibson, and Epiphone. Again for starters I still recommend getting Humbuckers, the wider, two row type. They aren't as thin or tinny at entry levels as single coils. I also recommend Orange Crush amps for beginners they are relatively cheap and sound good. humbuckermusic.com

Depends on the sound you want. If you want Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, or Guns N' Roses sound, you've got to go for a Gibson with humbucking pickups (dual coil). The 57 classic or Burstbucker pickups are the pickups used by those very same artists. If you want a cleaner blues sound such as Clapton or Pink Floyd, you've got to go with Fender Stratocaster. It has 3 single coil pickups. You can choose 1 of the 3 pickups or a combination of the 3 (5 settings, 1 for each pickup and 2 for the "between pickups" setting).
