Dropped D tuning means to detune the low E string down two half tones to D. So your guitar tuning would be

E
B
G
D
A
D (instead of E)

This tuning is used by Van Halen and groups like nickelback. It allows you to play power chords with one finger. For example, you can play E5 by:

E --------
B --------
G --------
D ----2---
A ----2---
D ----2---

Van Halen uses it in Unchained to get the low D bass sound in between chords in the intro.
