Easy Answer.

Lincoln believed in democracy a) because he understood ultimately how slavery didn't allow all men to vote when different states treated the same race differently (citizens v. property) b) because he never actually declared war on the south saying it was a domestic insurrection which did not require the Senate's approval c) he wanted to reconstruct the South, not tear it apart and make an embarrassment out of it.

Lincoln though was autocratic because he became an essential dictator during his Presidency. He ordered police and military agencies to detain and arrest anyone suspected of anti-union activity or opinions, he disallowed anti-union journalism and did not allow provide reporters with 100% accurate reports of what was going on in the civil war, and he seized many state militias and armories for National Security intents to prevent nationwide riots like the draft riots in NYC.

Lincoln was a Federalist that did not believe in states rights. The one thing he did understand was that the South had more deep water ports and without the South the North had no commerce.
He didn't care about slavery, that was a rouse. He wanted federal control and painted a picture that everyone in the south had a slave(s). Economically that is farcical. Additionally, the other thing that upset him and the establishment was their reliance upon the South for food, which is true today.
The feds hate the south and the Midwest for our natural ability to be the breadbasket to the world. They have allowed our country to be subverted by international interests through food subsidy programs.
IMO never trust the federal government and the propaganda that they teach in schools. .
I too used to be a huge Lincoln fan, until I understood his desire to centralize all states through economical strong arming and slavery was a side issue that he focused on to gain support for his real agenda.
