So it doesn't stink, leak odors onto your foods. Say you warmed up a lasagna entree, then made one of those microwave cake desserts. Your cake might have a garlicky taste to it.
Plus with a messy microwave, you will eventually lay a new plate of food in a mess and then set it on your lap or tablecloth, or whatever, and spread the mess around.
Plus don't you just think it's gross to have a nasty microwave? You are right though, you can take comfort that if you do your best to keep it clean, no matter if you get it all, at least it is sanitary.
Another thing, food residue in the microwave can MOLD, especially if you don't use it for a while, and to my knowledge, mold isn't a bacterial thing or germ based problem. I don't know if it has a chance in the microwave either, but if it did, you or someone else would be susceptible to allergic reaction.
Just clean it...for dignity, if nothing else.

GERMS CAN, you'd need to leave on a hi-density microwave all the time in order to constantly kill germs, bacteria.
Germs and bacteria grown sometimes at a rate of millions, billions per minute. So say you cook something at NOON, then your microwave sits all afterroom and you put your hand in there at night to put something in, those germs may be killed that have grown during the day, but not all of them and when you pull your hand out after putting an item in, you likely have pulled back out Millions of germs.
CLEAN THE MICROWAVE DAILY.

I wouldn't clean it daily. Once a week is enough. The odors from one food will get into another.
