Yes. I once got a cab in Bristol. The fare should have been no more than £6/7, but the guy literally started to drive in the wrong direction. When I asked him what he was doing he told me it was a short cut. I pointed out it wasn't etc....... This carried on for a while and eventually we got to where I was supposed to be. The guy checked out his mileage and took out the little chart and asked me for close to £20!
I point blank refused to pay anything. He locked me in the cab and threatened to drive me to a police station unless I gave him £20. I told him if he did I would report him for false imprisonment, kidnap and robbery.
Funnily enough he opened the door immediately!

Yes...in Istanbul.
I was so annoyed after an argument that went nowhere because we couldn't understand each other...that i got out of the taxi...made a great show of opening the door for my incredibly beautiful Iranian fiancee....and slammed the door so hard that it fell off!
It was as if the world stood still.
The driver got out of the taxi and tried to fix the door back on...which was impossible...I felt like the worst person in the world ever...my girlfriend looked at me as though I had caused a diplomatic incident...but at the same time, with a promise of sex if I sorted it out...
These taxi drivers have nothing if they don't have their cars,...so we spent the afternoon at the taxi drivers mothers house eating the sweetest cakes ever after having gone to various strange looking yards to get his car fixed.
I gave him a lot of travellers cheques...he gave me a load of money that looked like blotting paper back. Some of it got exchanged later for the best kebab you will ever have in your life!!!
Have I ever been conned by a taxi driver?...If I have....I am glad.

what does the meter say?
In St Petersburg (Russia), rode what we thought was a cab with a meter....kept clicking up every other second...was about $20 for about 2 miles. When we got out, we realized it wasn't a real taxi at all, but the guy had put a plastic thing on top of his car to make it look like one! Crafty bugger.

they have tried, but I am not the immigrant here, and I grew up in this city so know my way around, even when drinking.
if they go the long way home I give them half, and tell them they are lucky I didnt rob them like they tried to rob me.
also, another time I flashed my hotel security ID and said I was an under cover police officer, and I authorised him to go through all the red lights. he did, and I got home really fast.
what a classic.
you see, you win some, you lose some. taxi trash!

it was last december when i got off the airport, i rode an airport taxi who tried to scam me. he drove me to the red lights district of the city which i did not intend to go, i was going to meet my wife at the hotel but he keeps on ignoring my directions and even the places that i tell him to go. It took us about 1-2hours to get to my destination, he followed my instructions (finally). he asked for an extra pay because he gave me a tour around the city (i have been there 4 times now). i was so mad i just gave him P500 instead of P550 and took off to meet my wife. (she got very worried). too bad i wasnt able to report that driver to the proper department....
it was in the Philippines...
