I have 1 Fantail goldfish and in the morning when i check the temperature its usually 71 so then i turn my light on and proceed with my day and by the time its night and im about to turn the light off the temerature changed to about 73.
but i have read on this page that goldfish need there light in the day and dark at night
so what im asking is, is it all good if i just always keep my light off so the temperature will stay the same temperature
if not, what can i do??
and the fish lives in my basement with no direct sunlight on it

Are you sure its the light that is making the water hotter and not just the air from the room making it hotter? If you can check the room temp and see if that's it. 2 degrees isn't that bad anyway since it happens throughout the day. Another thing, what type of light is it, incandescent or fluorescent? Fluorescent doesn't get hot enough to warm up the water much so if you have incandescent then get a compact fluorescent bulb instead.

Honestly, you don't need much more light that ambient room light (simular to any room on a ground level with the shades or blinds open) for gold fish. However if you like looking at them under the light I assure you that a two degree temperature increase over the course of a day is no reason to be conserned. Here are some options... Move light further away from the tank or buy a flourescent light. Hope this helps! :)

Get a lamp and put it near the tank, that way there isn't direct heat but still light. Yes, they can't be in dark all the time but as long as the tank doesn't get too cold without it, a farther away light should be fine. Turn the light on in the morning and off when you go to bed.

Long as there is no living plants in the tank obviously, just make sure you have the light on for some part of the day so the fish gets at least some light.

Nothing to be concerned about. Goldfish retain better coloration with a good amount of light.
