On most Chevy small blocks the plugs stick straight out from the heads. On angle plug heads the plugs are angled away from each other and that can interfere with the header tubes on headers that are for non angle plug heads. Angle plug heads are a specialty item and were never installed on a factory motor and were a "racing" item generally

there were 2 different cyl head that chevy made with angle plugs the last 3 numbers on the cyl head casting are 361 and 362 1 was early fuel injection and the other was early carb mostly the fuel injected ones were on the corvette and both heads were rated around 290 hp to 365 hp depending what options were ordered with the car they were also nick named double bump heads the reason that the note with the headers say that they wont fit angle is they are made for later models of heads as the angle plug heads were made only until the early seventy's

hope this helps and gives a little bit of info

i've installed headers on some chevys before. first of all, the only headers we deal with in the shop are Doug Thorley Headers. we remove the plugs and plug wires before we put the headers in place. once we put the headers in, we fasten them with 2 bolts to get an idea of how they sit. i haven't seen any problems with them getting in the way of the spark plugs, but if they do, i recommend you try a different brand of headers.

spark plugs won't clear the headers and if they would you would burn your plug wires right off on the hot headers.
