A shockingly large amount of people do not know that West Virginia is a state, in part because the peculiar name (no East Virginia--but, granted, there is no OLD York, either--not in this country, anyway). What would you have named West Virginia if you had gotten the chance?

I kind of think that naming it after the mountains that are in it, Appalachia, might have been cool. Or after the river that runs near my hometown, Mononogahela. Lincoln would be cool too, and quite appropriate since he's the one who signed the order creating the state. It sounds odd, but there's a Washington state right?

As a great piece of West Virginia trivia... there was an attempt to create the state a year earlier in 1862, and the name that was to have been used at that time was "Vandalia" (which probably sounds a bit too much like "vandalism" for comfort).

There's a big writeup on it here:

I grew up in Fairmont, WV and attended WVU before moving first to the Washington, DC metro area and now to the Dallas, TX metro area.

I'd call it Freeland!

West Virginia was against slavery so when Virginia left the USA for the Confederacy to fight in the Civil War, West Virginia wanted to stay loyal to the USA and did not secede.

So, a good name because it was against slavey would be Freeland.
