I guess the same reason they like to run in wheels. Exercise and mental stimulation.

Well, when we stick them in those little plastic balls theyre kinda trapped..maybe theyre trying to get out. With a wheel they have the option to get on and off whenever they please..with those balls theyre not done until we say they are. I used to be okay with them until I had a hamster and I put her in one for a while..I found her 15 minutes later in the corner, sweaty , dizzy, and freaked out. ...I guess she didnt want to be in that ball after all. I havent stuck a hamster in one since.

No, they probably do not know they are exercising, but it is in their nature to run and in the wild, they would run for many miles in search of food.

i dont really know if they like it but what choice do they have??? either run and keep running or stop and chance getting eaten by something....
