I bought some landscape fabric from Home Depot - not the cheap stuff. It is excellent. Once down, place stones, rocks, etc. No need for weed killer. Last for years.
Do not use plastic. It degrades, doesn't allow drainage either. when it degrades, little irritating weeds will appear.
Newspaper will disintegrate - and you will have little irritating weeds again.

before you place the stones, clear the space a few inches larger than you need. Then lay a good quality, heavy-duty weed cloth over the tract. Pin it into the soil. Then add a good slow release weed killer and place your stones. After that, apply at least 4 inches of mulch. This will provide a nice attractive border and if you continue to mulch throughout the year, prevent weeds.

Yard cloth bought at Lowes, Home Depot and almost any place like that...( gray is the heaviest, black is thin and will grow the most weeds...) I know...I live in FL and I made the mistake of putting down rock (on top of GOOD yard cloth) and the weeds grow like mad...you have to keep weed killer down all the time, summer and winter (nothing is perfect and will totally prevent weeds.)

yes , its called weed mat. You can buy it in rolls or by the metre. usually comes in 2 widths - 91cm and 1.8metres. its fairly cheap to buy and will stop all weeds except nut grass. Its also great for gravel as it stops the dirt moving up,.
