How does a chemical equation relate the macroscopic, observable reaction to the interactions occuring at the microscopic level?

Not quite sure exactly what the question is getting at, but my best guess would be phase change. For example take the basic reaction 2 Na + 2 H2O ----> 2 NaOH + H2. In this reaction Sodium (Na) is a solid, H20 is a liquid, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) is a liquid, and H2 is Hydrogen gas. On a microscopic level the equation tells us that there was a single replacement reaction in which Sodium and Water were mixed to form Sodium Hydroxide and Gas. On an observable level we see that a solid mixed with a liquid produced another liquid and a gas in a violent reaction. Hope that kinda helped
