How about smearing some kind of yucky stuff on the handle - maybe peanut butter. You will know its only peanut butter but in the dark and probably rushing, they won't have time to consider licking it off their fingers because they will be so grossed out. It shouldn't be hard to then just wipe any remaining off.

be careful of the legal issues - case in point, the family of a man electrocuted by a trap while breaking in to a house sued and won a wrongful death case (if my memory serves me)
we don't have the right to punish, only to defend ourselves
perhaps a security camera will enable you to bring the perpetrators to justice.
maybe just leave a note - "smile, you're on candid camera"

Have them arrested for breaking and entering. Let the law enforcement officials determine their recompense. Vengance is not ours. If you'd like to deter them, then perhaps you should put up a sign that violators will be prosecuted or something akin to that.

you can wire a sensor for a camera or other alerting device . for a more "functional use" if you have a metal door or hasp that must be touched use a cattle fence electrical device to deliver a shock. these are non-lethal (who wants to kill their horse or cattle. just ask the supplier ( farm supply) to show you how to wire it up.

If you can get electricity out to it try a motion detector with a sound alarm.

wait out behind a tree/or in bushes with a camera... Get a dog..(if you don't have one so it will bark). Get security lights.....Get an alarm.............
