Oopsie...sounds like someone took a power surge.

The problem could be as simple as reseating some components (not that I'm saying that would necessarily fix the problem), to as complex as having to undergo major surgery on the mobo or C: drive.

If you have an IT department at work and are on good terms with one of the techs, describe the problem. You might be lucky. However, all things being equal, the spike that hit your computer (from the "dirty" electricity), probably did some physical damage.

The other option, is that the surge may have altered some settings as far down as your BIOS (unlikely), or a little closer to the "surface," in your autoexec file.

Whatever the probability, unless you have some in-depth knowledge of what to do, take it in to an experienced troubleshooter / tech, pay the $40 an hour, and have him/her diagnose the situation (some places will even do a preliminary diagnosis gratis - they won't charge until they have to open the case). If you're luck there, (s)he may even show you how to "fix" it yourself (in case of recurrence) if it's a simple enough solution!

Hmmm...after reading through the previous answers, I'd say use the system restore before you do anything else, and only if that doesn't work, try other options...

Do an all files & folders search for the word "Restore," or navigage to the appropriate folder (typical routing: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools).

it all has to do with what processes are running in the background of your operating system. I dont think it should have anything to do with the thunderstorm, but more like what software is running in the background while you are trying to shut down the computer....try the following website: http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

Or just use yahoo search and type in windows xp shutdown problems and you can diagnose your problems further

XP ain't all it cracked up to be. I would do a system restore under your system tools. This the best tool XP has in my oppion.
