I've never really understood what a republican or democrat is in the essence people always tell me I'm republican and stuff like that. Sometimes I'm told I'm liberal too and I'm not exactly sure what that means.

Can someone explain in basic terms what it means when people are classified as one or the other? Some examples of why people would think you're one over the other?

What about being a liberal? And what's the opposite of that? Conservative?

The definitions are so vague and confused they really do not mean what they should.
Liberals want freedoms
such as drugs
gay marriages
abortions
and religious tolerance
take higher taxes from the rich and help the poor
do not support wars that are profits for the rich...
the corporations/ super wealthy are to be policed (large government)

liberals are the minority with the likes of most of hollywood (actors) etc.

Conservatives
believe in christian fundamentals
of kill thine enemy
support the wealthy becoming richer
let the poor starve
and little freedoms......except to work a lot
they are conformists and believe in alienating anyone outside it
the media is corporate owned and often plays an important role in coercing the conservatives into a frenzy......

If i had to summarize I would say conservatives are hard working, greedy, judgmental, and afraid of change.....because they are in power....
Liberals want to help the poor and treat the world with respect rather than domination,,,, They see equality as a right, and that sometimes people are greedy and selfish, so the govt must police wealthy and corporations from taking advantage of the people.

Of course i am biased as others here on the spectrum....

As a whole Democrats and Liberals are the same thing and Republicans and Conservatives are the same thing.

Democrats are for Big Government, Higher taxes, legal abortions, stem-cell research, Taxing the rich and giving to the poor, Policing corporations, anti Iraq war, marijuana legalization, national health care, raising minimum wage, anti death penalty, stricter gun laws, and lean towards socialism, and are generally more open about sex. Statistically, Democrats are more ethnically diverse. They are also widely considered more open thinkers and reformers. The reason that Democrats are called that is because they are more in favor of true democracy, meaning that every person has a vote on every issue.

Republicans are for small gov't, big business, lower taxes, pro Iraq war, pro ethics, pro death penalty, pro 2nd Amendment, anti stem-cell research, pro insurance-provided health care, anti gov't involvement in business, pro harsher punishments, pro individual responsibility, pro military. Statistically, Republicans are more intelligent, more educated, and more successful. The reason Republicans are called that, is becaue they are more in favor of a representative democracy (Republic), meaning we elect officials who vote on every issue.

I am a Republican because I believe that the right to live is more important than right to privacy (to a degree). I believe that the death penalty should be an option in cases of murder, treason, and terrorist activity. I believe that guns don't kill people, that people kill people. I believe that I know how to spend my money better than the government does. I think that since the rich already give up 35% of their income, and the poor only give up 10%. I think that the rich pay enough. I believe that people should get to keep what they earn. I believe that the gov't should be held accountable to the people and not the people to the government. I believe that good products spur the economy and create jobs. I think that business should be rewarded for creating jobs. I think that welfare programs keep the poor unemployed. I prefer to give the poor a hand-up, instead of a handout. I think that raising minimum wage will cause businesses to raise prices, so even though people are getting paid more, the dollar wont buy as much. I don't believe that a true democracy works because the masses are not smart enough to govern themselves. I think that Republics work better because elected officials will understand more about where the results of a certain vote will lead.

I believe in many democratic principles. I am pro choice. I am pro stem cell research. I am pro marijuana legalization. I am pro gov't health care. I am pro lighter prison terms.

Most people don't agree with everything that one party represents (If they do they are brain-washed). You won't fit perfectly into either category. It is just the bigger issues that people decide on.

Liberals, (Democrats) believe that EVERYTHING should come out of The Gub'ment. Conservatives (Republicans) were suppose to believe in smaller Gub'ment. This last batch sold us out. But we're suppose to stand for, "Less is Better".

Democrats and Republicans are two different political parties. If you were a member of either, you would know.

Republicans - Those who like lower taxes but always screw things up by doing favors for their buddies. Like to portray they are for traditional family values but then have secret sex lives and tend to dream about getting a smoker in the oval office by a hot intern.

Democrats- Those who like higher taxes but always screw things up by doing favors for their buddies. Like to portray they are for all types of families but then have sex lives that aren't secret. They tend to get smokers in the oval office by fat interns.
