Seriously. They do the exact same thing as the Yankees as in picking up ridiculously priced players but it seems like everybody can't get over their so-called "underdog" status.

Well, as a Yankee fan, I admit that the Yankees have a high payroll. But they make a lot of money, by drawing 4 million people a year, having their own cable network, and selling the most merchandise of any team, what else are they supposed to do with the money, just give it away? They already do give tens of millions in revenue sharing, but no one ever mentions that.

What make me laugh is that Boston fans, like BRUINCRASHER, try to make it look like the Red Sox are still "the little team that could", when in fact they are SECOND in payroll. The Yankees have had a couple of season where the payroll exceeded $200 million but they have NOT spent more than a billion dollars in the past five years. That's just more Red Sux fan propaganda to cover up the fact that Boston spends a lot too. The Yankees payroll has allowed Boston to go unnoticed in spending money, until recently. It was not the Yankees who spent almost $52 million for the rights to an unproven Japanese pitcher, and another $50 million to sign him. The Yankees unloaded Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, and Jaret Wright. Also, the contracts of Posada, Abreu, and Rivera expire after this year, and they will be brought back at a smaller price. The gap is closing Boston fans, your team spends a lot too, and everyone can see it! You have no right to criticize the Yankees' payroll any longer. Hypocrites.

I have, as a die hard World Champion St. Louis Cardinals fan, i've watched those behemoths of the east fritter away hundreds of millions only to beat by a team with about half of the pay roll, and two times the talent! A-gagagagaagagaga. But, that team couldn't stand up to the ninety-eight million dollar cardinals, who know how to play defense. so, i think that even though boston and new york are the biggest spenders, they don't deserve all of the hype and media coverage they do get, especially over that ridiculous "rivalry", one fueled by money, redonculously angry fans, and overpaid brats- i mean baseball players. The real rivalry and the real baseball is in the heart of America, the least covered sector, where the Cardinals and Cubs fight in an epic battle each summer in a rivalry fueled by history, geographical claims, and some of the best fan bases in all of sports. It was complete and udder malarkie that the 2006 world series didn't get the attention it deserved because of the competitors within. Just because it wasn't new york and new york, the media didn't tune in. The 2006 world series was a conflict between two teams that literally rose from the ashes, the tigers battling back after being the laughing stock of the al for the past decade, and the cards fighting after their sub-par season to a miracle finish that deserves twenty times the media coverage that the eastern teams get combined. Over here baseball is about pride, skill and the hometown, not who has the biggest payroll.

The Red Sox are as they always have been, except without the drought. The Yankees payroll is far more than the Red Sox. However, the Red Sox do what they have to do just to stay in contention because signing a lot of big name talent will do a lot for winning in the regular season and getting a chance to play in the postseason.

has anyone noticed all of baseball is throwing money around hoping to cash in on a bought world series ala florida, boston, and every yankees win since the babe. a salary cap is in desperate need to keep the low market teams (i.e milwakee phoenix and tampa) from going nhl and paying more than they can possibly afford till they go belly up.
p.s. as an astros fan i hate the cards, but i gotta agree with the cards fan a few responses up from me. all that money hasnt done much for em lately, and the rivalry is pretty lame to every city without a clam chowder named after it. i would like to remind him however that as much as cards and cubs hate eachother we're the ones you guys have had to scrap with the last decade. alas though our gm tim purpura is determind to put this team in the tank before the first hillary for pres comercial comes out.

If your goal is to be a baseball team, and place near the bottom of the standings, keep it as status quo, If you're a good team with player's that are producing for you and near the end of their contract, do you offer them the same package, or raise his contract. if not can you replace him if he leaves or do you stay status quo. If winning the World Series is the results of obtaining proven hitter's and pitchers and their contracts are manageable. and you're competative year in and year out then as owners you owe it to your fan base, that sells out the stadium(s) for the rest of the bottom status quo teams

Yeah, and as a Sox fan, I'd rather they re-sign Trot Nixon for 3 million than sign JD Drew (not finalized yet) for 70 million.
