No, nothing is for eternity. Even machines will be "broken" sooner or later.
Even the universe is not eternal.
I would rather stay natural, live for few decades, and go to rest...

I would definitely do it. Just because I'd like to live a little while after I'm dead. Just as long as I had a self-destruct mechanism to which I had complete control over so if I got bored, I could off myself. I wouldn't want a Highlander situation to happen, where I'm "cursed to roam the Earth forever."

This reminds me of a graphic novel series called Transmetropolitan wherein people of the future have the capability to download their consciousness into nanobot clouds not too dissimilar from spirits, thus freeing one of all bodily restrictions. I'd definitely like this since I'm in a wheelchair.

Besides, what do you have to lose?

Hypothetically, Neo, yes. You could live forever.

Sure, I've seen Ghost in the Shell, Lawnmower Man, and Vanilla Sky too, but you don't have to worry about it ever happening in real life. Have you researched transhumanism? The theory is there, but the understanding is purely fictional.

and just for shitsandgiggles, sure I'd do it.

But only if I could meet Max Headroom.

We don't know enough about consciousness to answer the 1st part of the question, but we're pretty sure the material universe -- hence the computer -- won't last forever. Hunt down Isaac Asimov's short story, "The Final Question."

In the computer, you would no longer be a bio-chemical entity from which love and emotion (joy / humor / bliss etc) are derived.
In the computer you would be dry, cold info . . . so what would be the point ?
Remember the humor / attitude you see portrayed by computers in movies is fiction or mimicking the programmer. HAL really doesn't care about its existence (space odyssey)

Well if it were a Windows based OS, you would be doomed because it would hang and need to be rebooted!

This was the basis for an old TV Show: Max Headroom as I recall.

cyber space isn't forever. i mean deactivate all computers electronics and such and where is it? we made it and dag guttin we can un-make it. i may have a grave misunderstanding about cyberspace but come on, this is a lousy thought experiment.

What if a comet comes from space and destroys the computer? Or what if a volcano comes and melts it?

But would the computer be able to make the decisions he would have made?

Computers hold ones and zeros in memory....how exactly does your consciousness have anything to do with that?
